The St. Louis Blues are 2-0, and the Detroit Red Wings are 0-2. Who would have expected that? Maybe not many people, but the Blues swept the Red Wings in Sweden to start off the season on the right note! It’s great to see the Blues win the first two games of the season like that, and they really proved a lot in those two games. Long gone are the times of the Red Wings owning the Blues. The Blues have a lot more talent now and can easily match up to Detroit, and they showed it last weekend.
As we know, the Blues took the first game 4-3, and then won 5-3 in what was a similar second game. The Blues found themselves down by two goals heading into the second period again, and just like game 1 — they ended up coming back and winning. They showed a lot of fight by never giving up. Keith Tkachuk scored two goals, and Andy McDonald, Brad Boyes and Patrik Berglund also scored as Ty Conklin got the win in net. They got off to a rusty start in the first, but picked it up nicely after the first 10 minutes or so and ended up playing well.
My three stars of game 2:
1.) Keith Tkachuk: He scored 2 goals and added an assist, and he just played a very good game. Not only did he show up on the scorecard a lot, but he was physical and was throwing his weight around. He laid a big hit on Lebda in the 2nd period! Big Walt still has a lot left in the tank and should be a valuable piece to our team once again. Nice to see him net a couple.
2.) Paul Kariya: Yep, he’s the second star again. He picked up 2 assists and it’s just so nice to see him out there flying again. He’s a force out there and really gives us a dangerous powerplay. I’ve been very pleased with how he’s started the season.
3.) Erik Johnson: He gives us that big shot from the point and also helps our powerplay. He got 2 HUGE assists that both set up big goals, and it’s great to see him back out there manning the point. His big shot is a very big addition. Welcome back to EJ as well!
Honorable mention to Ty Conklin. He is a very capable backup behind Mason, and I feel really confident about that tandem in goal this year.
It was a fun weekend, and now the Blues are back home to take on the Atlanta Thrashers tonight for their home opener, and I will be there! It should be a fun time, and hopefully the Blues can pick up a win in front of an electric crowd at the Scottrade Center. The lineup is the same as the two games in Sweden, and rightfully so. It’s a great night for hockey!
Go Blues! (And Cardinals in the NLDS).
