Roam If You Want To; Polak Signs Extension Deal

Strike another name off the “Restricted Free Agents” list; on Thursday, June 2nd St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong made an offer to the Czech defenseman Roman Polak. Polak was rewarded with a five year extension, a very handsome contract, which offers him a total of $13.75 million over those five years. Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the breakdown of the contract is back-loaded as follows: $2 million for 2011-12, $2.45 for 2012-13 and $3.1 million for the last three seasons (2013-2016 seasons). Armstrong was candid and to the point, repeatedly expressing his confidence in Polak’s shutdown defensive play as well as expressing the need to resign Polak in what seems to the peak of his already strong career. While the Ostrava native isn’t one for much offensive play and doesn’t add a lot in the goals and assists departments, he plays a gritty, rigorous defensive game and it’s only fair that Armstrong and the gang are offering him a contract that seems to reward his outstanding labor.

{More after the jump…}

Though Polak is known for his forceful skills and take-no-bull type of play, he’s also been one of the Blues top penalty killers and will surely be a player the team looks to first when it comes to an effective member of a penalty killing unit. Roman Polak was drafted by the Blues in the sixth round, 180th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry draft. While many people won’t care where Polak has played prior to playing with the Blues, this deal is made a bit sweeter once people realize that the Blues have been the only NHL team Polak has played with – it’s nice having such an outstanding player, a defenseman at that, that came up in your own system. Polak has proven to the front office that he’s not only a great player on the ice but has an outstanding off-ice personality as well, and has been available for community and volunteer opportunities and though that may only be a small part of the gig, it shows his grace and dedication to the sport as a whole.

Post Music: Roam by The B-52′s – Just a smart alec take on Roman’s name. Kinda. And if you don’t like Fred Schneider (or even know who that is), we can’t be friends.
