This past week was short, and prepared the Blues for their long stretch away from home. While the team had a rough loss at home to the Bruins on Wednesday, they managed to pull off two awesome road overtime wins. The win against Nashville was essential in showing what the team can do when placed in a high pressure situation, against the team that seems to be the most likely first round playoff matchup. The wins against Nashville and Winnipeg were battles that the Blues needed to grind and fight for as a team. Everyone played their part at some point, but only one player was able to make his presence felt consistently despite only playing two games during the already short week.
Jaroslav Halak is our Bluenote winner this week for his ability to thrive under pressure. Halak was the rock that kept the Blues together during their two tough road wins. In Thursday’s game against Nashville Halak faced 27 shots and allowed two goals. Both goals were during the second period, and Halak shutout the Preds during the third period, and more importantly during the shootout. Starting off the road trip with a win against the division rival Preds was an excellent victory for the Blues. In the Blues’ second straight road win, Halak played like a man possessed. Facing 41 shots, Halak saved 39. Halak let up two goals in regulation and a goal in the shootout to the Jets’ Blake Wheeler, and the Blues were out-shot by 25, but Halak’s performance allowed them to pull out the win in a shootout. Halak’s two impressive performances doubled their shootout wins from 2 to 4 in only two games.
Halak has played much better, especially in high pressure situations. Personally I’d rather see Halak have the main role in a playoff series over Brian Elliot. Please post in the comment section below how you feel about the Blues’ two goaltenders. Who would you rather start an important game?
