A Preview of Round 1 in the Playoffs?

Tonight the Blues will be continuing their road trip in Los Angeles to face the Kings. The Kings (36-25-12) are hot right now, having won their last five games. As it stands now, they would be the 8th seed in the playoffs, but only trail Dallas by one point in the Pacific Division. The Pacific is currently a heated battle, and the top four teams are separated by only three points. However, it seems likely that the Blues and Kings could meet each other in the first round. While yesterday’s game to the Ducks may have seemed to be “less important,” tonight’s game should be no joke. The Blues, as they have done so well all season, will be all in to win this game and refocus. The team looked sloppy yesterday, and despite scoring three goals, blew a lead and lost only their second game all season when scoring at least three goals in a single game.

The game last night may have been sloppy, but some good things came out of it, as KJ mentioned in his recap. Jaden Schwartz scored on his second shot of the season, David Perron made a crazy diving goal, and David Backes returned from his foot injury with gusto. The Blues have been so good at fixing their mistakes and coming back sharper after a loss. While tonight’s match-up won’t indicate exactly what happens in the playoffs, it would be nice for the Blues to dominate this game and show the Kings what they may be up against. Something interesting to watch will be the play of Brian Elliot, who should get the nod to start tonight. If he has a sharp performance, it could make things interesting in the starting goalie discussion for the playoffs. As we all know, Jaroslav Halak had one of his poorer performances for the season, saving only 18-22 shots last night.

After the loss last night, the Blues hold only a one point lead over the New York Rangers in the race for the President’s Trophy.
