Always looking to continue making improvements along the blue line, St. Louis GM Doug Armstrong has been vocal about adding a top line-mate for Alex Pietrangelo, the Blues Norris Trophy candidate last season. But, after the Blues missed out on Jason Garrison, the former Florida Panther who just inked a six-year deal with the Vancouver Canucks, and seem to be out of the running for the highly coveted Ryan Suter, it seems that the only available candidate through free agency is Matt Carle.
Carle doesn’t figure to come cheap for the Blues, as he will be sought after by every team that lost out on Suter. With Suter signed, Carle will be the highest remaining free agent defensemen, and thus his price tag will rise considerably. This may force the Blues, who have limited salary cap space, to explore other options through trades after the free-agent dust settles.
