The Blues had one of the best, if not the very best, defensive units in all of the NHL last season. They led the league surrendering 165 goals, a franchise record, and would have been an NHL record if the goals in shootouts were not counted. Still, it was one of the Blues main goals this off season to get a big, experienced, top tier defender to play on the first line with Alex Pietrangelo.
The contract extension for Barrett Jackman made fans breathe a little easier as it gave the team six NHL quality defensemen – Pietrangelo, Jackman, Kevin Shattenkirk, Roman Polak, Kris Russell, and Ian Cole. That leaves Kent Huskins and Carlo Colaiacovo to become free agents and the Blues trying to make a trade, because free agent contracts are through the roof. If they can make a trade, they can slot Cole back in the seventh slot, and have a top six on opening night that is even better than last year.
Rumors have arisen on many fronts. One of the main ones being a possible trade with the Calgary Flames for Jay Bouwmeester. As of yet though nothing else has developed with the exception of a few depth signings, like Jeff Woywitka (a former blue). We will have to wait and see what comes up in the next few weeks, but trade or no trade the defense should have another solid year.
