NHL Realignment Possibility

Although realignment has been “shelved” by the NHL in regards to the current CBA talks, the curiosity and uncertainty regarding how the league will shake out in 2013-2014 is mounting. As Winnipeg continues to play in the geographically perplexing Southeast division, many ideas are being passed around, the most promising being the four conference alignment. This would feature four conferences, where the top 4 from each would enter the playoffs. From there, a home-and-home between each team would produce a winner of the conference, followed by an inter-conference playoff between the four winning teams. Definitely a complicated system, but one that could pay huge dividends in terms of travel costs and maintenance of rivalries.

Here are the four proposed conferences:

Group 1: New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, New York Rangers, New York Islanders, Washington and Carolina

Group 2: Boston, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Buffalo, Florida and Tampa Bay

Group 3: Detroit, Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis, Chicago, Minnesota, Dallas and Winnipeg

Group 4: Los Angeles, Anaheim, Phoenix, San Jose, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Colorado
