While other big name stars are taking their talents overseas for big, tax free contracts, Patrik Berglund has decided to return home to Sweden to play for free. St. Louis’ centerman will take his talents back to Västerås, the club team that he played for prior to joining the bluenote in 2008. Berglund attributes much of his NHL success to his formative years in Sweden and has decided to give back and mentor the junior players who are currently coming through the Swedish pipeline.

Berglund’s decision to return to the Swedish league, Hockey Allsvenskan, pro bono may come as a surprise to most NHL fans, but not to his supporters in St. Louis. Blues fans have watched Bergy grind on the second line for multiple seasons and know his true character. He’s a leader  who has battled through multiple injuries and an excellent representation of all that the current Blues’ roster stands for. For Blues fans, Berglund’s decision to return to Sweden for free is another testament to the character of #21.
