Kris Russell Turns Down One Year Deal with St. Louis Blues

The St. Louis Blues seem to have their defensive core set in stone after the signings of Kevin Shattenkirk and Jordan Leopold, but GM Doug Armstrong would like as much depth as possible on the back end.

Defenseman Kris Russell is currently a restricted free agent and has found himself as the seventh man on the defensive depth chart.  Despite the depth of the Blues defense, Armstrong extended a one-year $1.5 million deal to Russell which was quickly turned down.

The Blues have sent Russell a qualifying offer and placed Russell on waivers.  After clearing waivers, Russell is still property of the St. Louis Blues but may be heading to a salary arbitration hearing later this offseason.

Doug Armstrong is going to have to make some difficult choices this year and one of which may be choosing between trading Kris Russell or Ian Cole.  Both are not going to be starters for the club and I don’t think Amry will want to carry both of their salaries.  Cole has already signed a deal with the Blues which leaves Russell as possible trade bait.

What do you think the value of Russell would be on the open market?  Can the Blues move him for anything in return or should they try to keep him with the club?  Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

More as we have it.
