The St. Louis Blues Shine When Faced With Adversity

The St. Louis Blues have experienced quite a month.  They have dealt with a very strenuous schedule surrounding the holidays.  The team has also dealt with numerous line changes due to the onset of multiple injuries and a major flu bug worming its way throughout the group.  With the odds stacked against them during the month of December, the St. Louis Blues have shined when faced with adversity.  St. Louis should be proud!

Currently the Blues have a record of 8 W – 3 L – 2 OT in December with the final game against the Minnesota Wild (12/31) currently in play.   This record is quite spectacular considering some of our top star players are on IR.  Below is a list of some of the players that have been injured, forcing the team to step up their game and keep the guys focused on playing their best.

Defenseman – Roman Polak (#46) – lower body injury – placement on IR announced on December 21st.

Left Wing/Assistant Captain – Alexander Steen (#20) – concussion – placement on IR announced on December 28 – out indefinitely & thought to be caused by hits incurred during the games on December 16th ( Ottawa Senators), December 19th ( Montreal Canadiens) and December 21st ( Edmonton Oilers).

Right Wing – Ryan Reeves (#75) - hand injury during the November 28th game against the Dallas Stars.  Reeves is recouping from hand surgery and reevaluated after 6 weeks.

Center/Captain – David Backes (#42) - upper body injury – injured during Dec 16th game against the Ottawa Senators, returned to the Dec 28th game against the Blackhawks but missing from the action on the 29th against the Dallas Stars and 31st against the Minnesota Wild.

Right Wing – Chris Stewart  (#25) – upper body injury (possibly nose/mouth) – injured 12/31 during game against Minnesota  Wild.

In addition to changing up the lines, the Blues have called Right Wing, Dmitri Jaskin (#26) and Left Wing, Chris Porter (#32) back from the AHL’s Chicago Wolves to bring their “A Game” and show the team, opponent and fans that they have what it takes to play in the NHL.

While we anxiously await the return of our strong and rugged leader (Backes) and injured stars, the adjustments made to team thus far has been captivating!  A few of the players that have stepped up and pushed our opponents to their limits in their last 5 games have been Right Wing/Assistant Captain, T.J. Oshie (#74) who has obtained 5 points, Left Wing, Jaden Shwartz (#9) who  has an outstanding 6 points, Left Wing, Vladimir Sobotka (#17) has 4 points and Right Wing, Chris Stewart (#25) has swiped a total of 6 points.

If the team can zero in on reducing the amount of penalties taken, increase the shots on net, strive to push the puck passed the crease and support each other on all areas of the ice, 2014 could be even more impressive than the activities that we have experienced so far in the 2013-2014 hockey season.

We hope that the injured and sick players are able to recoup as soon as they can so we can have all healthy players back on the ice.  Happy New Years fans!  Let’s Go Blues!
