In a bizarre sequence that has unfolded this afternoon, T.J. Oshie, David Backes and Alex Pietrangelo have reportedly found their missing Olympic luggage. It was reported earlier in the morning that Dan O’Neill, the assistant director of media relations for the team, had sent out an email to various members of the press concerning bags that made it back to the United States from Sochi, were picked up by FedEx and then didn’t show up at the other end.
Eighteen of the 21 pieces of luggage were returned to the players, but Oshie, Backes and Pietrangelo were each missing one. Backes had particular reason to be concerned with his missing cargo because it contained various signed pieces of Team USA memorabilia that he intended to auction off for charity.
KMOX is now reporting that FedEx has located the missing baggage. As per their update:
Dan O’Neill, the assistant director of media relations for the team, sent an email Friday morning hoping to get the word out about the missing bags, and to add some urgency to the search process. A few hours later, O’Neill emailed letting the media know the bags had been located.
FedEx located the missing bags and they will be delivered Monday or Tuesday.
That’s a happy ending to a story that could have gone quite differently. It seems odd that the bags would go missing for a period of time and then reappear once the media was made aware of the situation, but it seems that the trio will get their stuff back in one piece.
