The St. Louis Blues won’t have any must-win games until the playoffs start. Still, David Backes‘ late goal against the Pittsburgh Penguins was a big one in that it might be the difference between splitting a back-to-back road trip or taking a three-game losing streak into the home stretch of the 2013-14 NHL season.
With less than 10 minutes to go in a 0-0 game in Pittsburgh, the Blues captain was able to tip a shot from Alexander Steen.
The tally gave the Blues a 1-0 lead in the third period.
Backes gets credit for the goal, his 24th of the season. Steen and Pietrangelo with the assists. Blues 1, Penguins 0. #stlblues

Since Vladimir Tarasenko was injured, St. Louis has run into some trouble when it comes to generating offense. They were shut out by the Chicago Blackhawks last Wednesday, only scored once against the Philadelphia Flyers yesterday and played two scoreless periods in Pittsburgh today.
Backes answered the bell though, and game up with a subtle but big play for the Blues.
