With less than a month remaining in the 2013-14 NHL season, it’s time to start thinking about potential first-round matchups for the St. Louis Blues. They’ve already clinched a postseason berth, and at this point it’s just a matter of who finishes where. With only six points standing between them and the final wild card spot in the Western Conference, the Winnipeg Jets are just a few games away from making the dance.
They have several teams they need to leapfrog and are running out of time, but they aren’t out of the race yet. Based on what happened the last time St. Louis and Winnipeg clashed, that’s a good thing for fans that want to see this budding rivalry reach another level.
On March 17 the two squads finished a the third period by engaging in a line brawl. With that fresh in mind, who wouldn’t want to see a first-round matchup against Dustin “I’ll fight your whole team” Byfuglien and the rest of the Jets? For our money, this might be the most entertaining potential opening round, but not just because of the intensity level that would surely carry over from those fights.
Winnipeg would present a tough test that wouldn’t allow the Blues to go to waltz through the first series of games, but they’re also a beatable squad. Here’s how we think the two teams stack up across the board, considering that this would be a seven-game series and not just a single game where anything could happen.
