The St. Louis Blues and Washington Capitals will do battle in just a few hours, and this game has a bit more intrigue than expected. If you were looking over the schedules of these two teams back in October, maybe this tilt didn’t reach out and grab your attention. The Capitals—fueled by a reinvigorated Alex Ovechkin—were expected cemented in the playoff picture and the Blues were were touted as Stanley Cup contenders.
The contest became a lot more interesting just prior to the NHL trade deadline when St. Louis shipped Jaroslav Halak to the Buffalo Sabres in a multi-asset deal for Ryan Miller. Buffalo then flipped the netminder to Washington, and now the goalie is set to play against his old team.
At least he appeared to be set to play against his old team. Reports leaked out today that Halak actually asked to sit on the bench against the Blues. This is somewhat surprising since this is a must-win contest for the Capitals. They’re sitting outside of the final wild card spot in the eastern conference and need points in a bad way against St. Louis;.
The Blues have plenty to play for at this point as well though. After losing to the Colorado Avalanche and Chicago Blackhawks over the weekend, St. Louis is suddenly in a battle for the Central Division crown—never mind the Presidents’ Trophy. Will the return of Alexander Steen boost St. Louis’ sagging offense? Or will Washington find a way to win with its back up against the wall.
