St. Louis Blues Morning Links: Bask In Winning Glow Over Buffalo

Good morning Blues fans! The Blues got the monkey off their back, at least for one night, by beating the Buffalo Sabres.

The St. Louis Blues had a little of the weight lifted off their shoulders on Tuesday night. The game may not have been comfortable the entire time, but the Blues did enough well to get the victory.

Things clearly did not start off very well. The Blues were dominating the game, as they have tended to do to start some games, and then took a silly penalty. That cost them.

The Blues have the best penalty kill in the league, but they continued to rely on it way too much. They gave up the first goal of the game on a Buffalo powerplay and had to kill off three others after that.

St. Louis just can’t keep that up. Regardless of who is in the lineup or who the coach is, they simply cannot lead the league in penalty minutes and hope to win.

They are pushing the limits as it is. It wouldn’t be so bad if they were penalties that regularly saved goals or was taking out a player with a huge check. It’s often ticky tack stuff that happened because players were flat-footed or out of position.

The Blues won though. We should not focus only on the bad things just because it has become a habit lately.

The Blues started to fight for each other a little bit more. Although it will not go down in the history books as a great fight, Robby Fabbri stuck up for Alexander Steen by actually dropping the gloves.

That was in addition to his powerplay goal that tied up the game. Sadly, he fell short of getting the Gordie Howe hat-trick.

Jaden Schwartz alleviated fears of going back on IR by scoring the go ahead goal in the third period after heading to the locker room due to blocking a puck with his ankle. The fourth line also got in on the action as both Kyle Brodziak and Scottie Upshall got goals.

It wasn’t a perfect game. Jake Allen looks a bit shell shocked even though he only allowed one goal, the team continues to take penalties and there were still lapse moments.

That said, it was a win. Sometimes that’s all you need.

I’m not going to go full bore and say it’s the start of something. You do have to start somewhere and hopefully the Blues can exercise a demon or two more against San Jose on Thursday.

Many outlets barely mentioned the name and those that did were probably met with a resounding “who?” from fans. We live in a day and age when everything is studied and kept for prosperity. Every milestone puck is retrieved and labeled even for the most minute things. With that in mind, it is amazing to think some of the sport’s biggest moments are just laying around somewhere unknown to anyone because nobody had the foresight to think it might be a big deal.
