St. Louis Blues rookie phenom Jordan Binnington has played his way to the number one goalie position, and he could be playing his way to a Vezina trophy.

The St. Louis Blues can attribute their 10-game winning streak to a variety of things. None more significant, however, than the play of rookie goalie Jordan Binnington.

Binnington has been nothing short of sensational this season for the Blues. After shutting out the Philadelphia Flyers in his first career start, Binnington has gone on to lead his team to third place in the division.

Making a case for Binnington to win the Vezina Trophy is unrealistic. He has played far too little this season to even be in the conversation, and even if he started the majority of the games for the Blues down the stretch, he would still not match up with other top goalies.

If Binnington had started the season in St. Louis and had the same amount of production, then he would be a legitimate contender for the league’s best goalie.

In 14 games played for St. Louis, the 25-year-old is an incredible 12-1-1 on the season with a .937 SV% and is allowing a minuscule 1.58 GAA

The work Binnington has done recently is impressive as well. He has earned three shutouts in his last five starts, including two in a row, and has given up a combined five goals in those starts.

Although his numbers are utterly ridiculous and may never be replicated by a rookie goalie ever again, Binnington does not have the workload as some of the leading candidates.

Vegas Golden Knights’ goalie Marc-Andre Fleury has played in 51 games and has posted a .908 SV% while allowing 2.61 GAA. Meanwhile, my leading candidate for the Vezina, Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy, has appeared in 36 games for Tampa and has a .928 SV% and a 2.32 GAA. Not to mention his league-leading six shutouts.

Even though Binnington has four shutouts in his 14 starts this season, the lack of games played will keep him out of the Vezina conversation. If it wasn’t for Elias Petterson of the Vancouver Canucks, we could be talking about Binnington for the Calder Trophy as well.
