The St. Louis Blues are going through the normal processes following a potential injury. It’s normal for fans to think the worst though.

Right now, St. Louis Blues fans are doing what anyone would expect following the potential injury of Jake Allen. They’re anxious, some are panicking and the general worry is growing with a lack of news.

All we know for sure right now is Jordan Binnington has been called up from the Chicago Wolves. Of course, that makes everyone jump to the conclusion Allen is ruled out.

This is a very plausible scenario, but not the only one.

The bottom line is that the Blues need two goaltenders in practice. Therefore the only thing Binnington’s call up means for sure is he is going to practice with the Blues.

The Blues already showed they were confident in Binnington. He was only sent down a few days ago and was the final goaltender to be sent away from the team.

The Blues were quite pleased with what they saw from Binnington in the preseason. He won his only decision and played in two games overall.

His stats were very good as well. He had a 1.18 goals against and .958 save percentage.

To be fair, it was only preseason. Binnington wasn’t seeing the big names for each team. That doesn’t mean he did not play well in the circumstances he was faced with.

So, whether Binnington is only up for practice or to be an actual backup, he seems ready. The minimal time away from the NHL team will help him as well.

If Allen really is injured, the Blues are in capable hands. The condition with that statement is that it be for a short time.

St. Louis needs the Snake to be in between the pipes. Whether you’re a fan of Elliott or Allen, the reality is the Blues made their choice and they need Allen to be healthy to be successful.

Carter Hutton has been a revelation so far. His record wasn’t stellar in the preseason but he kept his goals against around two and had a save percentage of .931.

Of course there is always the worry of a backup having a bad game. That puts a lot of pressure on.

There have been other times when I advocated against fans overreacting. This is not one of those times.

Personally, I am still not jumping off the train. Hutton has shown enough to shoulder the load for a few games or few weeks.

Binnington played well enough to be the backup and stay on the bench. He played well enough to spell Hutton if there is a bad game.

Most of that calmness is due to the lack of news though. Hopefully they are just being cautious and seeing how the injury reacts over the next few days.

Hutton has played well enough for the Blues to not rush Allen back and make things worse.  Though October is very important for this year’s team, it is more important to have Jake healthy.

The Blues have had such bad luck with the position that anxiety is understandable. It seems like any time we have reason to be excited about the position, the rug is pulled out from under us.

So, for now we are all in this holding pattern. Whether Allen is injured or not, all the fans can do is wait for his return whether that be sooner or later. For now, let’s save the panic for when we have official confirmation of any anticipated bad news.
