St. Louis Blues Vs. Boston Bruins Is A Fitting Final To Make History

The St. Louis Blues have an interesting history with Boston, as does the city as a whole. Thus, it would be very fitting to beat the Bruins in a final.

The St. Louis Blues do not have the longevity, from a historical standpoint, that the Boston Bruins have. That is no fault of their own, but the Bruins have simply existed longer.

The Bruins have been around since 1924. They are also the oldest team in the United States.

So, with that longevity comes history. In a bit of coincidence, the Bruins were quite similar to the Blues in their early years.

Boston came in as an “expansion” team. They built their roster out of some players from the defunct Western Hockey League and others. Boston also made the Cup final in the first year they expanded the playoff format, though the Bruins had been around for couple years already, unlike St. Louis who did it in their first year.

By the time the Blues came into existence, the Bruins had three Stanley Cups to their name. Now, the B’s have six banners hanging from their rafters.

Of course, in St. Louis, we are most familiar with the one that came in 1970. That was the last time the Blues made it to the final and they were swept by Boston.

The Bruins swept the still fledgling Blues in four games, though each game was hotly contested. That win ended a 29-year drought for the Bruins too.

Oddly enough, Boston ended another drought against St. Louis. In 2004, most St. Louis fans will remember, the Red Sox swept the Cardinals to win their first World Series Championship in 86 years.

Thus, Boston was able to end two droughts against the city of St. Louis. Boston also won its first NFL championship when the New England Patriots defeated the St. Louis Rams in 2002.

So, why can’t St. Louis turn the tables a little bit? Why not make some history at the expense of Boston for a change?

The Blues certainly fit the bill. They have never won a Stanley Cup. They have not even been to a final series in 49 years.

50-plus years of frustration could all come to an end in the course of two weeks. If not against rival teams like the Chicago Blackhawks or Detroit Red Wings, what better team could there be to face than the Boston Bruins.

Just four simple, yet hard to earn, wins could change history for so many of us. Instead of constantly seeing the black and gold flying through the air from 1970 played over and over, we might see the blue note shown in highlight reels.

Boston has had their chances and they ended some very long streaks against St. Louis. Now, it is the Blues turn to flip the script.

Though we are all trying to keep our emotions in check, it is hard not to buy into these kinds of things. So many things that you would have chalked up as coincidence have happened during this playoff run. Numbers keep piling up that make us wonder if outside forces are at work.

Now we see an old foe in the final with a chance to keep that feel of destiny going. Of course, Bostonians are chuckling, feeling they have the better team.

The eastern people are patting our proverbial heads and saying aren’t we cute. It is up to the boys on the ice to get things done, but if it was pure will of a city, the Bruins would be crushed.

Boston has had their time. They’ve had their fun at the expense of St. Louis. The Celtics defeated the St. Louis Hawks three of the four times they played. The Cardinals beat the Red Sox in the 60’s, but the Saawx have taken the last two meetings. Hopefully, it is St. Louis’ time for glory this time around.
