St. Louis Blues: Never Tell Me The Odds

The St. Louis Blues won an absolute thriller of a game last night in Chicago. The Blackhawks jumped early on the mighty Blues going up 5-2 after the 1st period.

After Brian Elliott was taken out of the game to be evaluated for a head injury, Jake Allen stopped everything that came his way. The Blues received goals from Alex Steen, Robby Fabbri, Jay Bouwmeester, David Backes, and a game-winner in OT from none other than the $60 million man Vladimir Tarasenko.

What has this taught us about the St. Louis Blues in 2015-2016? Well, for one the Note will not quit, no matter how many goals they’re down. David Backes is becoming less Captain America, and more Han Solo with the ‘never tell me the odds’ mentality this season. With injuries to more key players than I’d wish to remember, this team should be struggling much more than their 2nd place in the Central Division would signify.

I remember another comeback win by a Blues team that was  catalyst for the rest of the season. The game that comes to mind is the game against the Boston Bruins which saw Chris Mason stand on his head in the 2008-2009 season. That massive win at the midpoint of the season was said to be the turning point for a young Blues team that could have rolled over and died for the rest of the season. Instead, they roared their way to a playoff berth.

Now, did I expect the Blues to make the playoffs even after last night’s disastrous 1st period? Of course I did. But a win in a hostile environment, against the defending Stanley Cup champions, a night after getting into Chicago much later than the team had expected, the day after losing to the LA Kings 3-0, our Blues showed their grit, and the will to defeat the Empire, I mean Blackhawks.

The St. Louis Blues youngsters in Robby Fabbri, Colton Parayko, and (making his season debut) Magnus Paajarvi, have been a part of a massive win against a heated rival in the face of adversity. This confidence boost will be huge for these players in their development.

Ken Hitchcock was proud of his boys in Blue when he spoke to STL Today after the game.

"It’s a real courageous win. With the day or night, or whatever you want to call it, to come back and play with the energy that we did in the second period, I thought the second period was one of the best periods we played all year. Guys deserve a lot of credit. We had every reason to live to fight another day, but the guys wanted to dig in, and the guys did that."

The Blues can use this game as fuel. They understand that they have the talent across the board to get the job done no matter what the circumstance, and no matter which players are missing. Perhaps most importantly at this point in the season, the Blues fans that watched last night’s game were treated to a fantastic rivalry game. I had a blast watching the Blues ‘roar bacon’ and beat Chicago in OT. I also love the new OT format. It’s going to be a fantastic season.
