St. Louis Blues Morning Links: Music City Letdown

Good morning Blues fans! Well the good feelings from the weekend are completely gone. The Blues couldn’t muster enough offense again and fell to the Predators 3-1.

The St. Louis Blues seem to be some sort of streak buster lately. Not in a good way of course, since they failed to bust the Chicago Blackhawks’ streak of wins in a rivalry night game on Wednesday.

No, the Blues seem to be the team everyone wants to face when they aren’t playing up to snuff or not scoring, etc. The Dallas Stars couldn’t buy a goal or win and lit up the Blues for six goals.

The Predators were struggling to get solid performances to open the season. Sure, they beat Ottawa on Tuesday, but playing the Blues made them look pretty good except for the first period.

Of course, the first period was the only time the Blues looked like scoring. It was one of those typical games where the wheels seemed to come progressively off the track the further the game went along.

The Blues were buzzing in the first. They looked like they were going to dominate and take the two points with them.

Carter Hutton was playing a solid game. Jaden Schwartz looked like he could have a multi-point night.

Instead, they failed to score on some of their best chances, as they do almost every game lately. It cost them as the Predators came to life once they realized the Blues were not going to run away with the contest.

Foolish giveaways and being weak on the puck or not smart with it continue to cost this team. We keep saying that this is what they are but they fool us each time they seem to turn a corner.

It is early in the season. There is no reason to make panic moves. This is a playoff team.

That said, they aren’t looking like a team that can go far if they don’t fix some glaring mistakes. While the mistakes are completely fixable since many are mental, the fact they aren’t going away at all worries many.

It wasn’t a pretty performance overall, but the Blues played well enough to win. They continue to shoot themselves in the foot with silly penalties. The scoring is bad enough but the time wasted on the penalty kill is starting to take a toll. (Post Dispatch)

The Blues made a rather significant lineup change before the Nashville game. Robby Fabbri was sent to the press box and Nail Yakupov got the spot in the lineup. Yakupov justified that decision with a fantastic backcheck that almost surely stopped a quality scoring opportunity. The reasoning behind taking Fabbri out was left a little less clear. (STLToday)

Switching the focus to something a little more festive and happy, the Blues announced their Alumni roster for the Winter Classic. I intend to write up a piece later about some of the glaring omissions, but for now, bask in the glory of the names that were included. (ESPN)

St. Louis native, Pat Maroon was not necessarily a hot commodity for fantasy hockey players at the start of the season. If he is still available in your league, you might want to sneak him into your lineup since he has been logging minutes with Edmonton’s top line and reaping the benefits. (NHL)

Tyler Ennis can’t seem to catch a break. The immensely talented forward has had injury problems throughout his career, including a concussion related problem last year. Now he is slated to miss significant time after groin surgery. (ESPN)
