The St. Louis Blues take on the Dallas Stars in their second game out of the holiday break. It might be the perfect time to face them or it might be the worst.

The St. Louis Blues take on the Dallas Stars this evening. As the old saying goes, the Blues need to look in the mirror before this game.

That saying has a two-fold meaning prior to this one though. The Blues do have to look in the mirror and decide how they are going to play. They will also be playing a mirror image of themselves in the Stars.

In terms of looking at themselves, the Blues simply have to play better. We have reached a point where that seems like an oversimplification, but the Blues simply need to do better.

They have been in a slightly upward trend, but the end results are still not there. They had an awful road trip through Canada, but ended it with a win in Vancouver. St. Louis played very well against Nashville, but we are getting to be beyond moral victories.

The Blues just need to win. Despite their wonderful start, the team has fallen to third place in the division due to the sudden ascension of the Predators and Winnipeg Jets.

With Winnipeg picking up some injuries, this would be a good time to find their own game and push back in front. Dallas might be just the team to play.

St. Louis has taken on the stars twice in 2017-18 so far. The Blues won both games and won by an average score of 3.5-1.

Both of those games were in St. Louis though. It will be the first time they see the Stars in Big D this season.

That’s where seeing a mirror image of themselves comes into play. The teams are trending in different directions, but their overall story is quite similar.

St. Louis is 4-6-0 in their last 10 games. Dallas is 4-4-2. If we continue on the coincidence train, both teams lost to divisional rivals in their last game. The Blues fell to Nashville while Dallas got waxed by Minnesota.

More from Editorials

The Blues came out like a house on fire, but have struggled lately due to offensive struggles. The Stars expected to have a potent offense, but could not score to save their lives to begin the year. Suddenly, they are only two goals behind the Blues and only five points back.

Five points is normally a decent cushion. Given the Blues tumble, it does not feel safe anymore. We can all remember when they had double-digit point cushions over their other rivals and those have evaporated.

Still, playing the Stars might be just what the doctor ordered. Though this team is different from past opponents, the Blues have not lost to the Stars since November of 2016.

While both of these teams are very different than those rosters, the Blues need to find a way to continue dominance. They seem to make a habit of being the team other squads end their woes against. Instead, the Blues need to figure a way to continue to have Dallas’ number.

These things are easy for a writer or fan to talk about. It is easy for us to say just go out and do it.

It is up to the players to get things done. They have to be the ones that say this losing is enough.

It is not as though they are that far off. They’ve created chances, but they’re missing the net by inches or hitting posts. Sometimes it takes luck to break out of those streaks, but sometimes you can make your own luck.

The Blues do need top guys to return to form. Brayden Schenn and Vladimir Tarasenko have gone cold and that should have little to do with Jaden Schwartz‘ absence.

They need those two to be the team’s best players. Even if they do not score, you need to be talking about what a great game those guys had.

We’ll see how it all pans out. Hopefully we are discussing a Blues win come tomorrow.
