St. Louis Blues Pull No Surprises With 2018-19 Third Jersey
The St. Louis Blues went old school with their third jersey for 2018-19. Many fans were relieved with the design, but there were few surprises.
The St. Louis Blues made a big production revealing their third jersey for the 2018-19 season. The team held an Ice Breaker event on August 26, which officially introduced several of the new players to the fans in attendance. It also showed off the new duds the Blues will be wearing.
Many fans, including myself, were very anxious about the reveal. The trepidation was mainly due to a small thumbnail picture on the online flyer for the jersey reveal. It showed an extreme closeup of a gray shoulder portion of an Adidas hockey jersey.
Suddenly, there were pictures popping up everywhere of awful jerseys on social media. The team had some good fun with it, of course, but there was still the option that the third jersey could have been something completely new.
New is not always bad. However, with some of the weird things NHL teams have rolled out over the years, you can never feel safe until you see something with your eyes.
Fortunately, the Blues pulled no surprises. They went with, essentially, the exact same design as their Winter Classic jerseys from two seasons ago.

This was quite welcome to most fans, though a very small letdown. The only reason it was any bit of a letdown was because of the build up.
The Blues made a big production of it all, including a very stylish video reveal. It featured Vladimir Tarasenko with some strobbing video boards surrounding him, only giving hints here and there of what it was. Then, they had notable players and alumni come out wearing the jerseys.
The only main difference is the neck. This version bears the silver NHL logo that Adidas has placed on all their jerseys. The inside of the neck also has the St. Louis flag design that has been on the inner portion of all the Blues jerseys since Adidas took over.
Outside of those differences, it is basically the Winter Classic jersey without the Winter Classic shoulder patch.
It is an interesting decision by the team. It was slightly expected, since so many fans wanted that. The surprising thing is that it would seem to deny a few sales.
There are going to be many fans that are not going to buy this “new” version just for a difference in the neck. If you already have one from the Winter Classic season, are you really going to invest another $200 or so just for a slightly different material or different neck?
There are enough people out there that will to, likely, make it worth the team’s effort. I, for one, will not be one of them. I already have a Tarasenko Winter Classic jersey and the fact it says Reebok does not bother me at all.
To each their own if you want a newer one. Ultimately, they are a very stylish jersey that is not going to irritate too many and made many happy. In the end, that’s the main thing.
