The St. Louis Blues usually have plenty of good theme nights when it comes to those extra tickets you need to buy. 2018-19 is more of a mixed bag.
Say what you want about departments like the game night productions or any of the others, but the marketing department is usually spot on for the St. Louis Blues. However, the organization’s choices for theme nights in 2018-19 is a little less stellar than we have become used to.
The team starts one off with a somewhat weak one. October 25 will be Barkin’ for Blues pet collar night.
I’m all for helping out pet shelters and if there are some dogs that get adopted from the night, so much the better. It just seems like this is something that could have ben organized without the confines of a hockey game around it and been just as successful. The fact that past nights like this have not offered collars small enough for cats is no small part of the disappointment as well.
Anyway, the team’s next theme night is on November 3 and it is WWE night. I’m a wrestling fan, so this one should be tailored to me. Not so fast, my friend. Maybe once they unveil what the shirt will look like, my opinion will change, but this one feels similar to the pet night.
The game night production team already does a lot of wrestling themed stuff, and while I like it, the wooo’s are wearing thin on some fans. It might really be beaten to death with an actual wrestling theme night. At least it is against a rival, so there might be actual fights.
November 9 will be Ladies Night and feature a Blues wine tumbler. This one is clearly not for me, since I am neither a drinker nor a lady. However, I can acknowledge that Ladies Nights tend to do very well for most teams, including the Blues. So, this one is a smart decision and the tumbler looks sharp, if it is the one pictured on the theme night page.

The St. Louis Blues are going to double-dip on November 19. It will be KSHE-95 night and also Scout night.
Although I am not affiliated with the scouts, I like the idea that they will get a patch for attending. The KSHE night is meh. I listen to KSHE, so the music that night should be good, but those dual-affiliated hats usually end up at the bottom of a closet somewhere. I’m sure it will be popular, however.
November 24 is Hockey Fights Cancer Night. I will avoid any political rhetoric surrounding cancer research, but I will say that I am glad the Blues are donating money directly to Siteman Cancer Research Center as opposed to the larger companies where funds can disappear without aiding anyone. Fortunately, the Blues are keeping it local and there is a hat to go along with it. Not too bad overall.
December 16 will be a First Responder’s Night and the team will offer a Blues tumbler. The tumbler, itself, is a pretty good idea and Backstopper’s do a lot around the community.
January 3 is the now, seemingly, annual Star Wars Night. The champion Washington Capitals will be in town, so the game itself should be good. Star Wars Nights have been hit or miss though. Sometimes they make them fun and other times it is just ‘here’s your t-shirt’ and there is no Star Wars to the night other than that. The design on the shirt and what they do for activities will define this one.
January 10 is Blues Soccer Jersey Night against Montreal. They picked a good opponent for this theme night, since Montreal has an actual MLS team – something St. Louis should have, but that is an entirely different article.
It’s a good idea and a popular one, seeing as the Cardinals did a soccer night during their season. For the sake of the fans, let us hope the jerseys are not as tight as pictured since not everyone likes that kind of shirt.
February 12 is Pride Night. This one has not been for me in recent years, but not for any prejudicial way. I am simply more of a traditionalist in that I like my logos to be the normal colors. I’ve never cared for green Cardinals stuff or pink Blues items (outside of the cancer awareness things). So, rainbow items just were never on my radar. However, this year the item is a backpack and that is more intriguing.
February 26 is Love Your Melon Night. Again, the principle behind the night is good. Love Your Melon supports pediatric cancer patients. It is slightly unclear if the fans attending this will get a beanie or if the proceeds from the night simply benefit Love Your Melon.
March 12 is Pink at the Rink and fans receive a hoodie. Two cancer themed nights seems a bit excessive, but if any of the funds help patients, so much the better.
March 21 is Medical Industry Night. You get a water bottle. The t-shirt they had last season was very nice, so there is hope for the water bottle, but it’s a water bottle. A shoulder shrug at best for this one.
March 25 is One Nation Night, where the Blues and Cardinals come together. This one is just a t-shirt, so it isn’t as nice as the shirseys they’ve had in the past, but I still like these types of shirts that represent both St. Louis teams.
Last, and potentially least, April 1 will be 90’s Night and fans will receive a t-shirt with the 90’s trumpet logo. I know there are actually a lot of fans that like this logo, but while I never had a problem with the jersey scheme, I never cared for the trumpet. Maybe this will end up being an April Fool’s joke.
Overall, the nights just don’t seem to pop very well. There is nothing majorly wrong with any individual night, but there aren’t a lot of good things being given away. The fact that these are usually premium tickets too takes a little of the luster out of it.
Normally, I might as well be getting paid by the Blues I am behind their stuff so much. This time, it is different. I might be going to the Kings game anyway, but the rest of them don’t have me that interested to be honest.
