We're midway through the 2025-26 NHL season and, with 43 games under their belts, we can start talking about which member of the St. Louis Blues could end up with this year's "Green Jacket". Unfortunately, this is not a good award to win, as it's whoever has the worst plus-minus (+/-) rating at the end of game 82.
Of course, plus-minus isn't the end-all, be-all of statistics; in fact, it's not all that descriptive. However, you can learn a few things about a player when it skews to the extreme ends, whether positive or negative. Not one Blue with more than ten games played this year has a positive plus-minus, though Otto Stenberg's getting close with a plus-4 in nine games--all other Blues are either at zero or in the negatives. There are three players, though, who are running away with the dubious "Green Jacket" title.
The three candidates in the running at the moment are: rookie defenseman Logan Mailloux, veteran defenseman Cam Fowler, and team captain Brayden Schenn. Schenn's minus-21 is the worst not only on the team, but in the entire NHL. Mailloux's minus-19 is in a three-way tie for second worst in the league with Brock Boeser (Vancouver Canucks) and William Eklund (San Jose Sharks), and Fowler's minus-18 is also in a tie for third with Axel Sandin-Pellikka (of the Detroit Red Wings) and Jonathan Marchessault (on the Nashville Predators).
Yikes! Those are pretty terrible numbers! At first glance, it seems clear that Schenn's on track to have the worst plus-minus on the team (and maybe even in the entire league). However, there's a case for Mailloux eventually wresting the title from Schenn: Mailloux has achieved his minus-19 in a mere 28 games, while Schenn's played in all 43 games so far.
If Mailloux continues to move up and down between the NHL and AHL, it'll put a damper on his case and let Schenn get some momentum. However, we should award points for how quickly a player gets to the basement, so right now we're going to say it's a toss-up between Schenn and Mailloux for the Green Jacket. If Mailloux remains with the Blues the rest of the season, he should run away with this no sweat.
