The St. Louis Blues have a couple of intriguing decisions to make this summer. Last season might not have gone the way it was intended, but at the end of it all, they are now in a position to set themselves up for a future playoff window.
It’s not open yet, but the lid is certainly lifted a bit.
With a fresh infusion of young blossoming talent starting to make the climb toward the NHL-level, there are some familiar faces that won’t be a part of this new look team in 2026-27. Unfortunately, these three players have likely played their last game with the franchise.
Let’s go over it.
Oskar Sundqvist
The time has finally come for Oskar Sundqvist to be let go from the Blues. With a new contract extension needed to remain here, there just isn’t enough room for him to stay.
Last season saw Sundqvist on the sidelines more than the season prior, with a drop from 67 games to 52. He also only scored 17 points, via five goals and 12 assists.
The new wave of prospects needs playing time, and “Sunny” is now in the way. If that wasn’t the case, the fan favorite would be brought back in a heartbeat.
Jonathan Drouin / Justin Holl
This is an interesting situation, as both Jonathan Drouin and Justin Holl were both obtained last season. Both also have one year left on their current contracts.
But the Blues may only have enough room to keep one of them, despite them playing in different position groups. It might be more beneficial to once again use them in a trade going out, to keep the youth movement going.
Jordan Binnington
The torch has been passed from Jordan Binnington to Joel Hofer. It is no longer No. 50's net, and there is now a reality that he may not even be on this team anymore.
This summer could see him packing up and moving elsewhere, but it is a long shot. The Blues are going to try to ship him off for the right price, but there is also the case of who will back up Hofer. The Springfield tandem was not terrible last season, with Will Cranley, Georgii Romanov, and Vadim Zherenko. Let us also not forget about 2026 draft pick Love Harentram.
Binnington is likely still going to be with the Blues next season, but it might not be for the entire year. The end is near for the franchise-leading goaltender.
