The St. Louis Blues have had some fantastic teams in their long and storied history. Looking back on nearly 60 years of professional hockey, it is a hard task to really boil it all down to a list of three-best. Much less rank them in order.
It may seem obvious as to which one is the greatest team of all time, but there is a case to be made about which teams follow that up. Let's talk about it.
3. 2013-14
The 2013-14 season featured the most wins in a single regular season in franchise history with 52. The Blues finished second in the Central Division that year, trailing the Colorado Avalanche by a single point.
Alexander Steen, the current General Manager of the Blues, led the team in scoring with 39 goals and 62 points on the year. This team also showcased a blossoming under-25 group of Jaden Schwartz, Alex Pietrangelo, Vladimir Tarasenko, and Kevin Shattenkirk.
The Blues might have a similar looking group on their roster right now to match that.
2. 1999-2000
The sole Presidents' Trophy in franchise history came with the Blues' 1999-2000 campaign. With a record of 51-19-11-1 for 114 points, it unfortunately came to an abrupt end in the first round against the San Jose Sharks.
This team was truly special, allowing only 165 goals in the regular season, which was the fifth-fewest in franchise history. When looking at 82-game seasons, the 2011-12 season only allowed less at 155 goals.
Defenseman Chris Pronger was the highlight this season, as he won the Hart Trophy and the Norris with his impeccable 14 goals and 48 assists for 62 points. He was a staggering +52 on the scoresheet, supplementing how awesome that defensive core was.
1. 2018-19
There is no question that the greatest Blues team in franchise history belongs to the 2018-19 roster that did something that no other squad has ever done. Winning the Stanley Cup.
This team was a bunch of underdogs and unexpected surprises, ultimately leading to an unbelievable game seven victory over the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Final. An early-season coaching change to bring in Craig Berube, as well as the emergence of the best goaltender in franchise history, Jordan Binnington, that year was truly special.
Until another team is able to win the Stanley Cup, it will be impossible to beat the 2018-19 squad. An accolade like that, to capture the biggest prize in this sport, is the marker to beat going forward.
