After a really strong victory against the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday, 1-0, the St. Louis Blues completed their back-to-back agaisnt the New York Rangers, losing in overtime 2-1. It was also the final game of the four-game homestand that saw this team go 2-1-1.
This was a head-scratcher, as the Blues secured a 1-0 victory and held it for a long-time before giving up the tying goal and then the eventual OT winner. Let's look at three big takeaways from this game.
Binnington was great, but it wasn’t enough
Despite the loss, goaltender Jordan Binnington looked great when he absolutely had to be. Backup, or possibly not anymore, Joel Hofer has started the last three games, and this was Binnington's first start in this homestand.
With his spot as the starter in jeopardy and the possibility of trade rumors circling around his name, No. 50 had to be great. He stopped 29 out of 31 shots, but once again, he could not come up clutch in overtime and left a point on the table.
Offense failed again
If you were to slap a rating on the Blues' offensive unit, out of 100, it would likely hover between 40 and 50. Yes, they were able to establish themselves for moments of the game that included extended offensive-zone time, and they got 27 shots on Igor Shesterkin. But one goal is never, ever gonna cut it, especially with back-to-back games with the same goal tally.
You can put the blame on Jordan Kyrou and Jimmy Snuggerud being out, but there has been plenty of time for players to try and step up and adjust. There is no excuse.
Berggren is the real-deal
In his second game with the Blues, Jonatan Berrgren proved to be the real deal. He notched the team's only goal, with a snipe over Shesterkin's left shoulder and into the top of the goalcage.

He was brought in as a viable option to help with the depth issues and to fill the gaps with the injuries. But, now, he is proving to be one of the best acquisitions in recent memory.
