The St. Louis Blues have a really interesting season ahead of them, and there is the potential for a bunch of different storylines. There are scenarios for this team to grow into a contender within the next 84 games with the roster that they have already, or some prospects may be needed to enhance the future.
One of those prospects that this franchise is heavily relying upon is defenseman Adam Jiricek. He will be a top defenseman for the AHL affiliate, Springfield, and every game this season will be a tryout for the big leagues.
Defensive core uncertainty
The current blue line has some serious uncertainties about it. Last season was a disaster back there, and although efforts were made to fix it this offseason, it is unproven to this point. That leaves the door open for some exploration of Jiricek at some point in the season.
Tyler Tucker and Brandon Carlo are designated to be the bottom pairing, and then it would be Theo Lindstein as the seventh D-man. Cam Fowler and Colton Parayko man the second pairing, and then Philip Broberg and Logan Mailloux eat up a bunch of minutes with the first pairing. Any of these pairings or players can be moved around, depending on what head coach Jim Montgomery and assistant coach Greg Cronin decide.
Tucker is easily expendable, as is Lindstein, the seventh defenseman, so keep an eye on how that unfolds throughout the season. If they go down with injury or do not live up to the expectations placed on them, Jirieck is on the next Uber up I-44 East.
Fan favorite from the jump
Once Jiricek makes the jump to the NHL level, expect him to be a fan favorite almost immediately. The Blues faithful have been waiting for this kid to make his mark, and there have been so many expectations already placed on him, and he has only played a handful of professional hockey games with Springfield last season.
His hype has not been seen in a long time, and if he can adapt quickly, much like Jimmy Snuggerud did when he was called up at the end of the 2024-25 season, Jiricek can become an overnight success story. Of course, that is if he shows some promise and eliminates the growing pains early.
As Parayko continues to age, and with the uncertainty of Mailloux continuing his upward trend at the end of last season, Jirieck is a heavily relied-upon player for this organization. General Manager Alexander Steen knows it and has to use him effectively so as not to spoil what fans have been waiting for since the 2024 NHL Draft.
