Wrapping up our expectation list for the offseason leading up to the 2026-27 season is none other than the newest person to man the highest position within the St. Louis Blues. For a recap, here are all of the previous expectations set throughout the summer to get you an idea of what to look forward to this season.
This is Alexander Steen’s ship now, and what he does with former General Manager Doug Armstrong’s pride and joy is fully on him. Let’s talk about what happened this summer, and what we should expect from him over the next few months.
Impact this summer
Since taking the big chair on July 1, a lot has happened with this team. The old core unit has basically been wiped out, and there is a new era on the horizon.
The biggest move, and most surprising due to the timing of it, was naming Robert Thomas as the 25th captain in franchise history. He is the perfect choice; it was just a surprising decision considering the direction and upcoming expectations for this team as a whole in 2026-27.
Steen has already made a pretty nice imprint on this organization in his first summer in office, and that should continue going forward.
Expectation for 2026-27
Steen is going to heavily rely on head coach Jim Montgomery for his expertise with the lineup. The GM went out and got the players, and the coach has to make it into a winning formula of players.
The next time Steen really has to really put on his work boots is when we approach the middle of the season. The trade deadline will be an active one for almost every team, as it is every season, and the Blues are gonna try to be a part of it. Jordan Binnington can be a big selling target, as is Colton Parayko if he cannot have a bounce back season.
The Blues could also be in a playoff spot, or in contention, and that is when Steen can try and work his magic once again to buy a solid piece for a late-season push.
Steen is going to have an interesting first year as the big man in charge. The expectation is still very much up in the air, and nobody can really place a finger on exactly where this team will end up. At the end of the 2026-27 season, the Blues just need to be in a better position than they were.
That is Steen's main expectation here.
