The offseason is in high gear, and with a few more months until the next season's big activities begin, like training camp and the preseason, there is some time to reflect on who can be an impact player for next season.
One big name that is getting a lot of attention is Justin Carbonneau, who has a 50/50 shot at being on the opening night roster at this point in time. Of course, it is up to whatever General Manager in lieu, Alexander Steen, wants to do, but the proof is in the pudding.
This kid can compete.
Carbonneau skipping Springfield?
The usual order of operations for prospects is to have them get some reps in down at the American Hockey League level. Heading down to Springfield is not a bad option, as it is a competitive level of fringe NHLers and fellow prospects trying their hardest to make an impression on the big-league club.
With Carbonneau and other high-tier prospects, there is a different set of circumstances that comes into effect. Much like Jimmy Snuggerud, who went right from finishing up his final game at the University of Minnesota, straight to his NHL debut on April 1, 2025.
Some players skip to the head of the line without having to endure the grind of minor-league hockey.
That very well could be the case with Carbonneau, who elected to stay with his QMJHL club last season instead of making the jump to the Blues organization. It worked out perfectly, as the 19-year-old potted 51 goals and added 29 assists in 60 games for Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. He led his group of highly talented teammates and was one of the best players in his CHL league.
There is no secret that he had a great training camp prior to the 2025-26 season, and his performance in the preseason games was pretty adequate. Carbonneau stayed after practice to listen to some of the Blues leadership group, and he took that back with him to Quebec. Expect that these upcoming months of training camp, followed by another round of preseason, will have him featured much more.
If all goes according to plan, Carbonneau could be flying around the Enterprise Center for opening night of the 2026-27 season. It seems like this is the direction it's heading, and if it does, both parties will get exactly what they want.
