On July 1, the St. Louis Blues will be getting a big change to their front office. General Manager Doug Armstrong will be stepping down from his duties, and former Blues forward Alexander Steen will be taking over.
In the exit interviews, Armstrong sat down with the media to discuss what had happened with the 2025-26 season, the letdown it was and what happens next during this offseason. In those final moments on the microphone as the headman of this organization, he also shed some light on his protégé, Steen.
What he had to say is exactly what Blues fans around the country need to hear.
Steen is ready
“I think Alex is hungry. He’s ready,” Armstrong said. “A new leadership voice at that level is going to be great for the franchise.”
There are so many changes happening with this team, and it is all happening at the same exact time. Steen is taking over a team that is just about ready to nuke a few more members of their core group, and the focus now is on the younger group. The Blues also have three first-round draft picks, which includes two lottery picks to help bolster that group right away.
This next season is going to have a number of different outcomes. Steen's first go-around as the General Manager is going to be a smash hit and the retool is over, or another letdown. The only saving grace there with the latter is that if it is a disappointment, at least let it be due to the younger players enduring some growing pains.
Steen is going to have a lot on his plate with Free Agency, and then working with head coach Jim Montgomery to try and put the best team on the ice. There is also the topic of captaincy following the departure of Brayden Schenn. All the while, Steen has to step in and fill the shoes of Armstrong, who brought the city of St. Louis their one and only Stanley Cup in 2019.
Even with a glowing endorsment, let's see if he has what it takes.
