A little over a half-hour after the free-agency window began, the St. Louis Blues made their first move. Jonatan Berggren, who was already very likely to come back on a new deal with the Blues, was officially re-signed to a one-year deal worth $2 million.

This is a very good start to the day, as deals are not exactly flying out of control. Alexander Steen is stepping into his new role as General Manager with a lot on his plate and a new direction to take the team in. The next era of Blues hockey is tailored toward younger players, rising stars, and getting Berggren back for another run to see what he has is a great start.
Small sample showed promising results
Last season, Berggren came to the Blues after being released by the Detroit Red Wings. Former GM Doug Armstrong scooped him up, and within two games, he was already making a big impact. In 36 games with the team, he had six goals and 10 assists, and it was clear that having him on the roster was working.
The 25-year-old has not shown enough at the NHL level to warrant a big extension, but this one-year trial is his moment. It is time to see if he has what it takes, or if the Blues need to go in another direction, and the small sample size at the end of the 2025-26 season was a fluke.
More signs are pointing to it being the real deal, but we won't know for sure until we see 84 games out of Berggren in 2026-27.
