The St. Louis Blues had an underperforming season, but it did give this franchise a glimmer of hope in their future core pieces. At least, it looks promosing on paper.
Sara Civian of Bleacher Report labeled one word to describe all 32 NHL teams 2025-26 seasons, and when it came down to the Blues, she was spot-on. Let's talk about it.
Frustrating is a perfect description of last season
It was indeed frustrating. After the incredible playoff appearance, and the run-up to it via the franchise-record 12-game winning streak, all things looked like the Blues were a Stanley Cup Contender. This past season could not be further from that truth.
The players were frustrating to watch, and the results were even worse. It seemed like there was no instance of gaining momentum, and overall, it was just a bad year.
Thankfully, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, as the things that were making this team frustrating to watch and root for are changing. General Manager Doug Armstrong's tenure is ending, and although he is certainly not to blame for this misfortune, a new day is coming with Alexander Steen taking over. Some new eyes might be exactly what this franchise needs to move forward.
The youth movement is in full effect, which if we are looking into a crystal ball for one word to descibe the Blues after the 2026-27 season, it would be growing pains. There is going to be an influx of young talent joining the ranks, and with that, comes NHL debuts and cohesion to new teammates and a new league. It is going to take some time to get this right.
Civian was 100 percent right in her description of the Blues season, and quite frankly, it could have also been horrifying, or confusing. Let us all hope that the 2026-27 season is not nearly as underwhelming, and some positive strides are made even if there is not a playoff berth.
