It is time to start the 'ber months, and that also means that the St. Louis Blues will take the ice soon enough. September is an awesome month for the hockey season, as training camp and preseason showcase the present and future of this franchise at the same time.
Blues fans rejoice; your boys are inching closer to playing the sport that we all know and love. September is here, and the grind begins anew. Let's get this party started.
Things to look for this month
September will showcase the much-talked-about and discussed training camp sessions, which will be tenacious and full of roster battles for the 2026-27 season. Head coach Jim Montgomery has had all summer to try to make these next few weeks dictate how the next six months go.
Will they be able to use this roster as-is for as long as they can, and eventually start to tap into this elite prospect pool?
There aren't any regular season games on the horizon, but there are some preseason games to fill the competitive itch. With the new Collective Bargaining Agreement initiated with the 2026-27 season, the NHL will have four preseason games and 84 games in the regular season. The Blues have two meetings with Dallas and Chicago from September 19 through September 26.
That is it for the in-game action, and it is important to note that the training camp sessions have yet to be announced. If you are in the St. Louis area, the Blues are hosting their annual "Blues and Brews" community event on the eve of that first preseason game on September 18. Mason McTavish, Connor McMichael, Brandon Carlo and Ross Johnston will be there to answer questions and meet their new fanbase, in-person.
This month will take this team, which is about 90% complete, and fine-tune it to a complete opening night roster. Montgomery, under the guise of new General Manager Alexander Steen, will craft the best possible 23-man roster for the 2026-27 season and attempt to finish the season in a respectable position.
After this 30-day month concludes, it is all systems go for the 84-game marathon. The Blues are not expected to make fireworks in the Western Conference, but have been deemed as one of the teams that has improved the most this offseason. Can they translate that to the Enterprise Center ice?
