Blues indicate progress, but it’s still not enough

The game demonstrated progress since the Vegas game. There was effort, aggression, connection, and purpose. However, it’s still not enough. The Blues need wins.

One minute and fifty seconds into the game, Nathan Walker was credited with a goal that deflected off a Toronto player. The goal came after Alexey Toropchenko and Oskar Sundqvist established an aggressive forecheck in the offensive zone. The Blues were off to a good start until about four minutes later, when defenseman Jake McCabe flicked a wrist shot from the point, through traffic, and over Jordan Binnington’s left shoulder, tying the game at one. After McCabe tied the game, the Blues struggled to establish offensive zone time and finished the period with only four shots on goal, compared to Toronto’s ten.

The first period rolled into the second, and Toronto's Steven Lorentz took the lead nine minutes and thirty-two seconds into the second period, making the score 2–1. Then, with six minutes and forty-two seconds remaining in the second period, Dalibor Dvorsky scored on a power play, assisted by Robert Thomas. After Dvorsky’s goal, it seemed the Blues found their rhythm. The second period ended with the Blues and Toronto each with 12 shots on goal, a significant improvement from the first period.

The Blues had more possession in the third period and did a better job of attacking the net. In the third period, the Blues outshot Toronto 13–7 and appeared to be the aggressors. Jordan Kyrou led both teams in shots on goal with six, and the team had plenty of scoring chances. With nine minutes left in the third period, Toronto had only five shots on goal since Dalibor Dvorsky's goal in the second period. It seemed that the Blues had taken over the game. Unfortunately, the Blues couldn't capitalize on the third-period scoring opportunities, and they lost their fifth overtime game after losing a puck battle to John Tavares, who assisted on the overtime goal to William Nylander.
