The St. Louis Blues needed to have a successful game against the Pacific Division-leading Anaheim Ducks, and they did just that. It was a complete 60-minute effort, and a 6-2 victory was the result.

The Blues played with purpose and thoughtfulness, and with time running out in the 2025-26 season, it is evident that it is crunch time for a Stanley Cup Playoff appearance. Here are some takeaways from the night, and what the Western Conference wildcard standings are looking like right now.

Hofer keeps them in contention

The Ducks are a very good team and will be a problem in the Western Conference playoff bracket in a few weeks. With very little offense from the Blues in their last contest out west against the Los Angeles Kings, there was some doubt that they could keep up. Meaning that goaltender Joel Hofer had to stand on his head in a close game.

But that was not the case as the Blues' offense put up a six-piece on the playoff-bound Ducks, and Hofer slams the door with only two goals allowed. He was strong in net, further making the case that this franchise's future is in his hands.

Robert Thomas is truly the team's MVP

There is no doubt that Robert Thomas is an amazing player, but he continues to show every night that he is the most valuable player on this team. These trade rumors are going to simmer down this summer, and once General Manager Doug Armstrong hands over the keys to Alexander Steen, the hope is that the new regime thinks to build the core around Thomas, not without him.

Against the Ducks, he adds to his team lead in points with three more, courtesy of a goal and two helpers. He now has 18 goals, 35 assists for 53 points in his 57th game of the 2025-26 season.

Wildcard Standings update

Now at 32-31-12, for 76 points, the Blues are just three points shy of the second-wildcard spot, held by Utah at 79 points. The Mammoth does have a game in hand, so they have the upper hand right now.

This is going to be a shootout at the end of the season in two weeks, as the Blues and Utah play their final game of the year on April 15.
