For all the talk we’ve heard over the last couple of seasons about Robert Thomas being on the trade block, well, Wednesday’s announcement pretty much squashed all that speculation.
If there’s one thing crystal clear following the St. Louis Blues naming Thomas as the team’s 25th captain, it’s that he’s not going anywhere.
Otherwise, why name captain a player that you’re going to trade in a few months?
The organization has left no doubt that Thomas is the guy. He’s the man in charge of leading this team for the foreseeable future.
Thomas was the best choice.
But beyond being an evident one, he’s the sort of player that can carry a team on his back. He’s old enough to be a big-brother type to the younger players on the team, but he’s still young enough to where the organization can continue building around him.
So, for anyone having their eyes on Robert Thomas, his naming as captain has to be a disappointing development. It means that the Blues and Thomas are committed to seeing their current project all the way to the end.
That has to be something highly encouraging to Blues’ fans, and, most importantly, it creates the sort of foundation that championship teams are built on.
Blues are Thomas’ team now
There is no question that the St. Louis Blues are Robert Thomas’ team now.
Wearing the C means that everyone in the lineup, rookies and veterans alike, will be looking to him for leadership, guidance, and, above all, to lead by example.
That’s the sort of thing that Thomas brings to the table.
He wasn’t chosen just because the “C” will sell more jerseys. It’s about naming the best player to lead a team with a tremendous amount of potential.
The way things are going for the Blues, he’s the sort of guy who can elevate the entire organization to the next level.
Yes, there were other fine choices. Colton Parayko wouldn’t have surprised anyone. Even a younger choice like Philip Broberg would have met with approval across the board.
But was there ever any real doubt that the Blues were Thomas’ team?
The new era dawning for the 2026-27 season makes it clear that the direction this team takes will see Thomas at the head. And while nothing is cast in stone, there is one thing that the organization is guaranteeing to fans: Robert Thomas isn’t going away anytime soon.
He’s in it for the long run. That’s great news for Blues fans and a tough break for anyone seriously wanting to acquire him.
