The St. Louis Blues did the unthinkable last offseason by signing not one but two players to offer sheets. Offer sheets are rarely used in today's NHL, and it's even rarer for teams to not match.
However, the Blues found the perfect scenario to sign two pending restricted free agents away from the Edmonton Oilers. Both forward Dylan Holloway and defenseman Philip Broberg signed their offer sheets in St. Louis last August and Edmonton decided to not match the contract for either player.
Holloway joined the Blues on a two-year deal with an annual cap hit of $2.29 million with Broberg getting a larger payday at $4.5 million per year, also for two years.
The Oilers received the Blues' second-round pick in the upcoming 2025 NHL Draft as compensation for Broberg and a third-round pick for Holloway. The cap hits for Holloway and Broberg were at the top end of the compensation levels for their respective picks.
The NHL announced the Offer Sheet Compensation levels for this summer, and the Blues were quick to the keyboard on social media.
The Blues enter this offseason with $8.9 million in cap space with pending free agents Radek Faksa and Ryan Suter. Joel Hofer is also due a raise as a restricted free agent.
