The St. Louis Blues are putting another meaningful stamp on the local and national girls hockey landscape this coming weekend. From August 14-16, the Centene Community Ice Center will host the second annual Girls Tier 1 Ice Breaker Invitational, bringing together some of the country’s top 12U and 14U programs.
Five organizations are making the trip and will participate between the St. Louis AAA Lady Blues (12U and 14U), Carolina Jr. Canes (12U), Arizona Kachinas (12U and 14U), Vegas Jr. Golden Knights (12U and 14U), and the Milwaukee Jr. Admirals (12U and 14U). The weekend will feature a round-robin style schedule with a minimum of four games and a championship matchup on the final day.
Mentorship, development, and a growing local pipeline
The Ice Breaker event is set to be more than just a hockey tournament, and instead will intentionally focus on development away from the rink. Players will take part in nutrition and leadership sessions led by 1st Phorm, team-building activities, a family skate session, and a Women in Sports panel and festival presented by Enterprise. The weekend is designed to give these young athletes the tools they can carry into the rest of their careers and lives, regardless if it will be hockey or not.
Among the group of Professional Women’s Hockey Ambassadors will be Olympic medalists Alex Cavallini,Joy Dunne, Brianna Decker, Megan Ferguson, Abby Roque, and Jincy Reese, who will be on site to mentor and lead sessions both on and off the ice. Roque and Reese will be familiar names to PWHL fans, while the St. Louis-native, Dunne, recently helped capture gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics with Team USA.
This event will help fit into the broader growth the Blues have help to drive since the launching of their Girls Hockey Development Program in 2020 as part of the NHL All-Star Legacy initiative. Participation in the program has climbed from just over 100 girls in the first year, to nearly 500 last season across Girls Development, Little Blues, North City Blues, and Try Hockey for Free. The interest in the movement has helped with low-cost access, skill development, and strong female-led mentorship in a welcoming and friendly environment.
The Ice Breaker Invitational is not only a showcase of talented girls from across the country, but a celebration of the progress that continues to be made. For the players on the ice and the families watching, the event is set to be a fantastic opportunity to bring a competitive balance between what happens the on the ice, and the practical life skills that is found and developed in sports.
