The 2026 NHL trade deadline was intense for the St. Louis Blues, not necessarily because of the trades themselves, but because of the controversy that ensued following the botched Colton Parayko trade.
The optics of this trade were bad enough. The Blues had apparently sent Parayko to the Buffalo Sabres the night before the trade deadline. The only issue in the way was the administrative task of having Parayko waive his no-trade clause.
That turned out to be the fly in the ointment. Confirmation of the deal took a while to go through, with the final verdict being Parayko declining to waive his no-trade clause. That situation effectively killed the deal, leaving both teams hanging.
But that wasn’t the issue. The problem was that news of the trade had gotten out before Parayko even knew about it. That’s the situation that insider Elliotte Friedman described in the latest edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast.
The Blues were furious that information leaked about the trade, prompting an investigation into team staff. According to Friedman, everyone on the Blues’ side passed the assessment. There wasn’t any evidence that someone with St. Louis had let information about before the deal was finalized.
While we may never know how news of the trade got out, it’s safe to say that the optics were terrible for both clubs. The situation has also put Parayko in a highly uncomfortable position.
Parayko unfairly framed as villain in botched trade
In the aftermath, Colton Parayko has been unfairly framed as a villain. Some Sabres fans went online to protest why Parayko didn’t want to go to Buffalo. Honestly, it was his prerogative, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.
In St. Louis, it doesn’t seem like fans took the situation as a slight. If anything, Parayko’s attitude could be out of loyalty to the organization.
But let’s be real for a minute. Parayko didn’t waive his no-trade clause out of loyalty. It’s just that a trade at this time, particularly to Buffalo, didn’t suit his plans. Some reports surfaced after the situation that Parayko wanted to stay on the West Coast.
If that’s the case, the situation truly made matters complicated for the Blues. They could have found a willing taker for Parayko, but it seems that they just ran out of time.
Moving forward, it doesn’t seem like the relationship between Parayko and the Blues will be any more beneficial. If anything, the Blues now have to really trade Parayko. Unless it’s all water under the bridge, the relationship could have been fractured to a point where neither side is comfortable.
It’s too bad things have gotten to this point, but that’s the reality of trade deadline negotiations.
