Cam Fowler wanted out of Anaheim. The longtime Ducks defenseman saw the writing on the wall, and Anaheim was happy to oblige.
The St. Louis Blues swooped in and made a trade for Fowler, giving up just a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft for Fowler. The Ducks even retained $2.5 million of his salary. He was arguably the steal of the season across the entire league.
Fowler had just four points (all assists) and was a minus-7 in 17 games with the Ducks before being dealt. But he refound his game in St. Louis. Fowler chipped in 36 points (nine goals, 27 assists) in 51 games while averaging 21:42 per game. He then went crazy in the playoffs with a franchise-record 10 points in a playoff series, including a four-assist game.
The 33-year-old defenseman has one year left on his deal with a $4M cap hit, and he's open to staying in St. Louis beyond that.
"Yeah, absolutely," Fowler said when asked about potentially signing an extension in St. Louis. "Those decisions and those conversations will have to be something that we go through over the summer with Doug (Armstsrong) and the whole group here, but I would love to be around as long as they'd like me here," he said with a smile.
"I honestly can't say enough abotu this team and this city and what it means to be a Blue," Fowler continued. "If those conversations come up, I'd be happy to talk about that, and we'll see what the summer brings with all of that."
With Torey Krug's career likely over, Fowler could take the mantle as the veteran left-handed defenseman on the blue line. They already have Colton Parayko and Justin Faulk locked up on the right side.
Fowler will be eligible to sign an extension when the league calendar flips over on July 1. Until then, all we know is that he's under contract through the end of next season.
