At the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, some assistant coaches under head man Jim Montgomery were let go. Both Claude Julien and Mike Webber were let go, and now Vinny Prospal and Greg Cronin will be stepping in.
This is a great move, and establishing this unity now gives some time to plan and execute better in training camp. Let's get to know these two coaches.
Prospal
Vinny Prospal, who some might remember if they are past the age of 30, was a great hockey player in his day. Most notably remembered for his time in Tampa Bay, he played for Ottawa, Philadelphia, the New York Rangers, Columbus, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, and Florida in 16 years.
Now, he adds the Blues to that list. But, this time, it will be behind the bench. He has recently spent time as an assistant coach with the Buffalo Sabres AHL affiliate, Rochester.
Prospal will be in charge of guiding the forward group.
Cronin
Cronin joins the Blues after spening time in Anaheim as their head coach. He was also the head coach for the Minnesota Wild's AHL affiliate, Iowa,
He will oversee the defensive unit, and of the two new assistant coaches, he is going to have more ground to cover. The defensive core is rapidly changing, and there is still a lot more work to do to try and round out the edges of this six-man unit.
Complete staff
Montgomery now has a complete staff, and the NHL Draft has not even happened yet. A new era is coming for this franchise, and there is no more room for excuses.
The 2026-27 season might not be all sunshine and rainbows, but it will look better. The youth will get their reps, and having an expierenced staff with former AHL coaches is going to be crucial.
