Preview: The St. Louis Blues (43-29-7) face the Edmonton Oilers (44-28-5) on Wednesday. If the Blues defeat the Edmonton Oilers in regulation and the Calgary Flames lose to the Anaheim Ducks in regulation, they can clinch a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the 46th time in franchise history.
Regarding the game's lineup, Jordan Binnington will be in the net. There are a couple of changes to the forward lines. Jordan Kyrou and Jimmy Snuggerud will swap lines, and Dalibor Dvorsky will replace Mathieu Joseph on the Oskar Sundqvist line. Calvin Pickare is in goal for the Oilers.
Blues get a shortie for the lead in the 1st…
With 11:39 left in the period all heck breaks out…Binnington goes after Corey Perry, who puts a cheap shot hit to Jordan’s head while he was down sprawling to make a save, and Binnington takes exception.
Oilers get a powerplay out of the melee…but Ryan Suter comes in shorthanded on a 2-on-1 with Pavel Buchnevich. He backhands a shot over the glove. Suter’s 2nd goal of the season in his 1524th game of his career…their 2nd shot on goal. 1-0 Blues. Oilers get one shot on the PP.
With 2:06 left Jordan Kyrou draws a hooking penalty against McDavid. Blues getting a number of good looks and get 3 shots on the PP.
Blues lead shots on goal 8 to 5. 1 to 0 at the end of 1.
Oilers score 2 in period 2…
Oilers get on the board 1:30 into the period. A turnover in the slot bounces to an open Oiler, and it’s jammed past Binnington…all tied at 1.
At the midway point of regulation time the Blues continue to lead in shots 13 to 9.
A rebound of a shot from the blueline is tucked in by the Oilers, who screen in the crease, making it 2 to 1 with 7:20 left in the period.
Period ends with the Oilers up 2-1. Blues lead in shots 16 to 12.
Oilers score late in period 3…
14 seconds into the 3rd … Jordan Kyrou with a wrister fired inside the post from the slot for his 34th goal. Robert Thomas and Buchnevich with the assists. And we are tied up at 2.
On a delayed penalty…Oilers with a 6-on-5 advantage...once again a screen in front of the crease and a blue line shot that Binnington saves and a rebound is tapped in 1:37 after the Blues tied it up…it’s now 3-2 Oilers.
A cycle in the Oilers end with Thomas, Kyrou, and Buchnevich…short, quick passes, and Buchnevich banks one in for his 19th of the season. 14:28 left and we are tied at 3. Pavel’s 3rd point of the game.
5 MINUTES!! Blues lead in shots 24 to 22…with 2:38 remaining Nathan Walker trips an Oiler…Blues need a big penalty kill…3 seconds into the PP McDavid called for holding and we are skating 4 on 4…with 20 seconds left McDavid makes a pass from behind the goal line to the slot and a backhander beats Binnington to the glove side…Blues pull the goalie for the final 20 seconds 6 on 5…and it’s over despite 2 last ditch attempts. Final 4 to 3. The Blues outshoot the Oilers 27 to
Calgary with 1 point losing in OT… so neither the Blues or Oilers clinch a playoff spot on the night.
