Goaltending versus goal-scoring, what is the bigger concern?

The St. Louis Blues have quite a few failures attached to them this season. Looking at the standings, this team has allowed the most goals in the NHL with 132, and has only scored 95 goals on the year, which places them in 30th of 32 teams.

That is the biggest goal differential in the NHL at -36. With that information, you can put two-and-two together that those two areas are plaguing this team.

Looking at the mid-way point of the 2025-26 season, and onto the rest of the year, what is a bigger concern? The goaltending, or scoring?

Goaltending inconsistencies

Jordan Binnington has just about been overthrown from his starting spot by backup Joel Hofer, and the tandem has been regarded as the worst in the entire NHL. What a major difference from last season, when they were considered one of the best-kept secrets in the Western Conference.

Now, both goaltenders are not pulling their weight. It is causing a major disruption in the Blues' ability to win games, as this team has shown no ability to answer when a goal is scored, or an opposing team take a two-goal lead. Both Binnington and Hofer have been able to get into a groove, and both have had plenty of opportunities to fix themselves.

It has not been confirmed, but the idea of Hofer being the starter and this being his team now should be coming. Binnington has had plenty of shots to give the Blues some wins, but it has not worked out that way with losing four of his last five starts.

Lack of contribution

On the other side of the coin, the Blues are amongst the worst in the NHL for scoring goals. That is a given, considering there are only two players to eclipse the 10-goal mark, and neither of them are Dylan Holloway, Robert Thomas, or Jordan Kyrou. Jake Neighbours and Justin Faulk are tied for the lead for goals, at 10, which would be middle of the pack on a lot of other teams in the NHL at this point of the season.

Kyrou and Holloway have been injured for some time, as well as Nick Bjugstad, Nathan Walker, and Jimmy Snuggerud. That is some serious firepower that is missing from the lineup, and this has been for quite a while now. Jonatan Berggren and Otto Stenberg have been nice breaths of fresh air, as well as Robby Fabbri. But, the core group of Pavel Buchnevich, Brayden Schenn, and Colton Parayko have been quite silent.

The Blues have to figure this out soon, and hopefully before any of the top talent comes back on the ice.

What is more concerning?

The Blues have been hindered by both of these concerning problems. Not to mention, the defensive unit has also been horrific. The fact that this team is a win and overtime away from a wildcard spot at this point in the season is a miracle.

The goaltending is a bit too far gone at the moment, but the goalscoring is so much more concerning. The Blues have an obsession with scoring two goals, which they have done 12 times this season. You cannot win hockey games with suspect goaltending and only two goals on the other end of the ice.
