The 2025 NHL draft is in the books, and the Blues made all three of their selections--no trades up, down, or out of the order. With 19th overall, they selected winger Justin Carbonneau, a winger with serious top-six upside and shades of Filip Forsberg, according to the Elite Prospects Draft Guide (who had him ranked 11th). In the fifth round, the Blues selected Russian winger Mikhail Fyodorov, who's a long shot but has a chance. Ditto goes for the goaltender the Blues took in the sixth round, Love Harenstam.
It's difficult to assess the Blues when they only had three picks, but let's take a look at how the experts regard their choices.
Scott Wheeler, The Athletic
Wheeler doesn't give letter grades but puts organizations on a scale of Winners, Overtime Winners/Losers, and straight-up Losers at the draft. The Blues were winners on Day One (Wheeler loves their selection of Carbonneau), and he settled on a grade of Overtime Winners when all was said and done.
Corey Pronman, The Athletic
Also from The Athletic, Wheeler's partner Corey Pronman was a bit less kind to the Blues' draft, giving them a C+. He grades Carbonneau as a solid second-line wing in the future and that, due to the Blues' lack of draft capital, the class will be graded entirely on how Carbonneau's career shapes up.
Steven Ellis, Daily Faceoff
Similar to Pronman, Ellis gives the Blues a slightly higher grade of B-, where he thinks Carbonneau at 19 is a steal, but the chances of Fyodorov and Harenstam making the NHL are pretty low.
Mary Clarke, USA Today (first round grade only)
At USA Today, Clarke liked the Blues' selection of Carbonneau and gave them a B+ for the choice.
Nicholas Nathanson, Bleacher Report (first round grade only)
Nathanson gives the Blues an A for their selection of Carbonneau and loves the addition of a goal scorer to their prospect pool.
Rachel Doerrie, ESPN
It was another solid grade for the Blues from Doerrie, giving them a B- because she loves the upside of Carbonneau. Again, though, the lack of picks dings the Blues a bit.
Taken as a whole, it seems like public opinion is that the St. Louis Blues did pretty well for themselves at the draft! Considering how few draft picks they had, betting on the upside of Justin Carbonneau at 19th overall was a homerun choice, and he could be quite the steal when we look back on the 2025 draft.
