It is end-of-season exit interview day for the St. Louis Blues, completely closing out the 2025-26 chapter for this franchise. Today, there have been some dynamite soundbites and quotes from our beloved team, and there is a lot to look forward to this summer.
Blues head coach Jim Montgomery, who just wrapped up his first full year as the head man behind the bench, had a number of quotes. One of the bigger ones has a really big impact on the team following the trade of their captain, Brayden Schenn.
Let's take a listen and break it down.

Let the youth prove themselves
This is a perfect quote from Montgomery, as it is not a necessary thing right now. Sure, you can just name Robert Thomas as the captain and be on your merry way, but what if it is the wrong choice?
It has become evident that Thomas can handle the responsibility, but what if there is another in waiting who can be a better fit? Like Jake Neighbours, who really stepped out of his shell this season. But this emergence is just for one 82-game slate, and there could be a slump coming in 2026-27.
Jimmy Snuggerud, Dalibor Dvorsky, and Otto Stenberg are also some possibilities for captaincy, but they are much too new to make that call. Flipping it to the defensive side, Philip Broberg is a great candidate, but again, not enough substance to accurately say that he should be the guy.
Whoever becomes the next captain, the first under new General Manager-in-waiting Alexander Steen, is going to have some big shoes to fill from Schenn. Not only that, but should they be named once this team comes out of this retool, they have to try to push this franchise back into the Stanley Cup contender conversation.
Montgomery is right, this core is young. And, this does not need to happen right now.
