Even with a less-than-stellar season, is it still safe to say that Jordan Binnington is the greatest goaltender in St. Louis Blues history? Many have graced Blues fans over the years with superb goaltending, but with a bunch of records and milestones on his resume already, it is safe to say that Binnington is ahead of the rest.
Let’s make the case as to why Binnington reigns supreme as the greatest Blues goaltender of all time.
Solid resume from an unlikely source
One day, probably around a decade from now, there may just be a full-length film or documentary on the story of Jordan Binnington. We all know the story of how he fought for his job, was bounced around all of minor league hockey, and achieved some of the biggest feats in Blues history. He took the most of his first opportunity in the show and never looked back. If you want to label his career thus far to that of another athlete, it would be a former St. Louis great, Kurt Warner in the NFL.
This unlikely story comes from Richmond Hill, Ontario, and with it is a third-round selection who is now the winningest goaltender in Blues History. Binnington stepped in when he was needed in 2018-19, and as a rookie, led the Blues to the Stanley Cup final. It was then, that this story met its peak.
In a heated and passionate seven-game series with the Boston Bruins, Binnington had the highlight of his career thus far in the final game at TD Garden. He held the Bruins to only a single goal on 33 shots, resulting in the first Stanley Cup in franchise history.
The only real comparable moment occurred this past week, with the 4 Nations Face-off. He played in all of Canada’s games in the tournament, and after losing to the United States in round-robin play, he won when it counted in the final.
Don’t count him out
This season, Binnington has had a tough year. At 15-19-4, with a save percentage of .897 and a Goals Against Average of 2.89, it has been a rough go in 2024-25.
With that said, these next 26 games on the Blues schedule could paint a different picture of this season. If there is one thing to say about Binnington, that is to not count him out. He has proven time and time again that it isn’t over until it’s over, and this playoff dream for the Blues this season is far from over.
But, it all rides on Binnington. Can he bring this franchise back from the dead, once again, to another playoff run? He already is the greatest goalie in franchise history, but if he can bring this team back to the playoffs this season or next, his number will be hanging in the rafters of the Enterprise Center.
