Jordan Kyrou to a division rival? Seriously, Todd? Oh yes. I'm 1,000 percent serious here. Because if the St. Louis Blues traded Jordan Kyrou to the Dallas Stars, they wouldn't just complete a blockbuster trade of the ages; they'd ultimately win out.
Why is that? Well, the Stars happen to be in serious cap trouble at the moment, but they want to keep contending. They also have a star player down there who they just can't afford, but the Blues, even if they're looking into retaining assets long-term, can.
Yep, a swap involving Jordan Kyrou for Jason Robertson would be a blockbuster deal between two division rivals that could help one another out. But one that would ultimately see the Blues win the deal here.
With Kyrou locked in until the 2030-31 season at an $8.125 million AAV, it would mean the Stars would have their key forward locked up for a price that's not much higher than Robertson's $7.75 million AAV. That would be a massive weight lifted off the team's shoulders.
The Stars and Blues could more than benefit one another with a Kyrou-Robertson swap
Meanwhile, Jordan Kyrou has a full no-trade clause, but he should have no problem waiving it to join a contender, even if that contender's a heated division rival. The Blues would get Jason Robertson, who they could afford to sign to an eight-figure deal if they made room by moving Torey Krug's contract elsewhere.
By moving Kyrou to Dallas and Krug's contract to a non-contender, the Blues could acquire, then immediately sign, Robertson to a long-term deal. And to be frank, St. Louis would end up with the better player. So, even if they had to move a high-potential prospect alongside Kyrou to get Robertson, they should go for it.
Robertson is almost certainly guaranteed to give you 35-plus goals per season, and that number should climb now that he's well entrenched in his prime. He's got an ironman streak going, playing in all 82 games in each of the past three seasons, and isn't afraid to play defense.
Blues would be a formidable team if they swapped Kyrou for Robertson
Imagine, for a second, if you put Robertson on the same line as Robert Thomas. That would evolve into one of the best one-two punches in the game, and since both are still in their mid-20s, they'd be a force over the next half-decade, if not longer.
That said, this is a deal I'd more than look to get done if I were general manager Doug Armstrong. Yeah, doing this would alleviate a big question mark for the Stars, but it would also land a winger with more overall upside than Kyrou.
This isn't saying that Robertson would immediately turn the Blues into a team that would make a surefire deep playoff run. But he'd make an outstanding piece of a core that will get there in another year or two. And maybe getting the best of the Stars would make a gigantic obstacle as they looked to complete that run. Still, I like their chances better with Robertson.
