The St. Louis Blues made one of the biggest splashes of the night by acquiring Mason McTavish from the Ducks. They will be sending the 15th and 29th overall picks to Anaheim in exchange. McTavish is an exciting young forward with a lot of upside. But the question everyone has been asking is: how does he fit into the long-term plans of the Blues? With them in a retool, how do they plan to use him? The Blues should view McTavish as the guy they should build their young core around.
Mason McTavish is the star that the Blues were missing
One of the main reasons the Blues chose to retool instead of rebuild is the young talent they already have. Guys like Dylan Holloway, Jimmy Snuggerud, Philip Broberg, and Joel Hofer have all proven they can be efficient at the NHL level and are all 25 and younger. With so much promising youth, they should be able to put together a competitive team as early as next season. If they can keep developing, they should have no problems winning hockey games next season.
But the one thing the Blues have been missing is the face of the franchise type player. The type of player you build the roster around is someone who can put the team on their shoulders. Every rebuilding team needs to have at least one player they feel this way about. The player who gives the fanbase hope that they will turn it around. Sure, Holloway and Snuggerud are good, but they are not good enough to be at that level.
This is a role that McTavish should be able to play. Sure, he has been a 40-50 point player throughout his career, but he is only 23 years old. There is still plenty of time for him to take another step in his game and quickly become a 60-point player. He has the skills to do it and will be on a talented first line with Holloway and Snuggerud. This combination should allow McTavish to find more success on offense and
He will also add some grit to the Blues culture. He has been described as a power forward who is a heavy hitter. This will add a physical presence to the Blues' top six and make them a tougher team to play against. This will be huge during the playoffs as well as important games late in the season. He is also a very competitive guy who will do whatever it takes to win. Exactly what you want in someone you consider the face of your franchise.
While it's a lot to ask, McTavish can become the face of the Blues roster. He adds a level of play that will elevate the roster and make them a much more competitive team going into next season.
