Just over a week ago, St. Louis Blues forward Mathieu Joseph was waived to create a roster spot for the return of Dylan Holloway. Now, Joseph is being waived again--this time for purposes of contract termination.

It's been a tough couple of years for Joseph in St. Louis, who was in the final year of his four-year, $2.95-million AAV extension originally signed with the Ottawa Senators. He was traded to the Blues in the summer of 2024, and has suited up for 99 games with the team. In that time, he scored six goals, registered 19 assists, and amassed 25 points while averaging 12:13 of ice time each night.

Joseph never quite lived up to the potential he showed in Ottawa, where he scored 11 goals and 35 points with the Senators in the 2023-24 season. Upon arriving in St. Louis, he often found himself a healthy scratch under head coach Drew Bannister and, after Bannister was relieved of his duties, Jim Montgomery. Releasing Joseph from his contract also opens up a roster spot for some of the Blues' prospects that may be pushing for NHL ice time at the tail end of this season.

Terminating the contract also allows Joseph to sign with another team. If he wants to play in the playoffs, he'll have to sign a contract before tomorrow's 3 p.m. trade deadline. There are plenty of contending teams that would surely love to have Joseph on their roster in a depth role, but not at his current cap hit--even if the Blues had retained fifty percent.
